Notification and International Cooperation
The government of South Africa notified the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) of an accident involving a Bell UH-1H helicopter that occurred on April 22, 2015. In accordance with international protocols, the NTSB appointed a U.S. Accredited Representative to assist the South African authorities in their investigation.
Role of the NTSB as State of Manufacturer and Design
Under the provisions of ICAO Annex 13, the NTSB, as the aviation safety authority of the State of Manufacturer and Design of the helicopter, is entitled to participate in the investigation. The Accredited Representative will provide technical expertise regarding the helicopter's design and construction to support the lead investigative agency.
Investigative Responsibility
All investigative information related to the accident will be released by the government of South Africa, which is conducting the official inquiry. The NTSB's role is limited to assisting the South African investigation team as requested.
