Accident Summary
The pilot of an experimental amateur-built airplane reported that the accident flight was his first flight in that aircraft. He planned to complete one circuit in the traffic pattern. During the final approach to land, the pilot recalled seeing power lines crossing the approach path and a building that he wanted to stay above. He also encountered a crosswind. The pilot stated he did not remember anything further.
Witness Observation
A witness on the ground reported that as the airplane approached the runway, it climbed to clear the wires, but then descended and "fell out of the air," impacting the ground almost vertically.
Pilot Statement and Post-Flight Examination
The pilot stated that there were no mechanical malfunctions or failures with the airplane that would have precluded normal operation. A post-flight examination revealed substantial damage along the fuselage.
