Engine 2 Anti-Ice Leak Indication on Embraer 170-200 at Warsaw Chopin Airport

Casualties unknown • EPWA, PL

An Embraer 170-200 experienced recurring anti-ice engine leak indications during taxiing at Warsaw Chopin Airport in February 2016.

What happened

On February 20, 2016, an Embraer 170-200 was undergoing taxiing procedures at Warsaw Chopin Airport (EPWA) following de-icing operations. During this phase, the crew observed an "A-I ENG2 LEAK" alert appearing on the Engine Indication and Crew Alerting System (EICAS) display. In response to this indication, the crew decided to return the aircraft to the parking stand.

Following an inspection by maintenance personnel, the aircraft was handed over to technical services for repairs. The initial maintenance action involved replacing the A-I ENG2 pressure switch. Although this repair was completed, the same anti-ice leak indication recurred the following day. Under the provisions of the Minimum Equipment List (MEL 36-00-00A), the aircraft was permitted to continue operations. On February 22, 2016, maintenance crews replaced the nacelle pressure regulating shut-off valve filter element, after which the aircraft was returned to service without restrictions.

The investigation

The investigation, conducted by the operator, focused on the sequence of maintenance actions and the recurring nature of the engine two anti-ice system alert. The inquiry examined the effectiveness of the initial component replacement and the subsequent technical interventions required to resolve the pressure regulation issue.

Probable cause

The recurring anti-ice indication was caused by a malfunction in the pressure regulating and shut-off valve.
