Incident Overview
A pilot operating a tailwheel-equipped airplane reported that during the takeoff roll, the airplane crested a hill approximately one-third of the way down the grass runway. At that point, the airplane was positioned close to the right edge of the runway. The pilot stated that he could not clearly distinguish the runway edges and applied left rudder. In response, the airplane departed the left side of the runway surface and nosed over in rough, muddy terrain.
Damage Assessment
The left wing sustained substantial damage as a result of the nose-over.
Mechanical Status
The pilot reported that there were no preaccident mechanical malfunctions or failures with the airplane that would have precluded normal operation.
