What happened
On May 9, 2017, at 09:06 UTC, a Cessna 150 operating a training flight from Mirosławice (EPMR) to Wrocław Strachowice (EPWR) experienced a loss of radio communication. After establishing contact with the tower and receiving clearance to land on runway 29, the pilot reported a straight-in approach but simultaneously lost contact with the controller.
Unable to communicate, the pilot transitioned to a second circuit, performing a left turn and flying to the downwind position over point SIERRA. During two circuits over this point, the pilot failed to notice visual light signals from the tower intended to authorize landing. The pilot continued flying toward point GOLF while attempting to re-establish radio contact. Communication was successfully restored once the aircraft reached point GOLF, at which point the pilot received clearance to enter the Wrocław CTR. The aircraft eventually landed at Wrocław Strachowice at 09:32 UTC, causing an approximately eight-minute delay for flight RYR7RU.
The investigation
The PKBWL investigation focused on the cause of the communication failure and the pilot's failure to observe visual signals. Following the incident, the aircraft returned to Mirosławic, where an avionics technician inspected the radio equipment and found no functional defects or malfunctions.
