What happened
After departing the airport as part of a flight of two, the pilot followed a lead airplane toward a ridge. While the flight initially encountered no significant turbulence, the aircraft suddenly entered instrument meteorological conditions (IMC), causing the lead airplane to become obscured. Upon transitioning to instrument flying, the pilot executed a 10° left course change and encountered a downdraft. Shortly after, the pilot observed trees approximately 100 feet away through the windscreen. In an attempt to dissipate energy, the pilot pitched the nose up, but the aircraft subsequently impacted trees and terrain. The aircraft sustained substantial damage to both wings.
The investigation
There were no reported preaccident mechanical failures or malfunctions that would have prevented normal operation. At the time of the accident, the nearest official weather station, located 16 miles southwest of the site, reported 10 miles visibility, a temperature of 70°F, and a dew point of 66°F. The weather included a broken layer at 2,700 ft, a second broken layer at 3,200 ft, and an overcast layer at 4,100 ft.
Findings
- The pilot's decision to fly in marginal visual flight rules over mountainous terrain contributed to the accident.
- Given the 4° temperature/dew point spread, visibility conditions were subject to rapid changes.
- The encounter with IMC and a downdraft led to the controlled flight into trees and terrain.
