An Airbus A320 operated by Indigo experienced a right engine failure and a subsequent stall during its departure from Chennai Airport.

What happened

On January 3, 2019, an Airbus A320, registration VT-ITW, operated by Indigo, experienced a failure of the No. 2 (right) engine during the climb phase following departure from Chennai Airport (MAA) in India. During the climb, the crew reported engine vibration and a stall was detected.

The crew performed an air turn back, and the aircraft completed a successful single-engine landing. A post-landing inspection of the engine revealed damage to the low pressure turbine stage 3 blades.

The investigation

The government of India is conducting the investigation. The NTSB has appointed a U.S. Accredited Representative to assist the investigation as the state of the engine manufacturer, in accordance with ICAO Annex 13 provisions. All investigative information will be released by the Indian authorities.
