Incident Overview
On June 26, 2019, an Indigo Airbus A320 aircraft encountered a problem with its No. 1 (left) engine during the climb phase of a flight from Dehradun to Bangalore, India. The flight crew reported hearing a loud bang, which was accompanied by an engine stall, as well as indications of high exhaust gas temperature and high engine vibrations.
Diversion and Landing
In response to the engine anomaly, the crew decided to divert the aircraft to Delhi, India. The landing was described as uneventful.
Post-Landing Inspection
After the aircraft landed, maintenance personnel conducted an inspection of the No. 1 engine. The inspection confirmed that damage had occurred to that engine.
Investigation
The Government of India has notified the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) of the incident. The NTSB has appointed a U.S. Accredited Representative, as the United States is the state of manufacture of the engine (a Pratt & Whitney PW1127G-JM geared turbofan). The investigation is being conducted under the provisions of ICAO Annex 13, and all investigative information will be released by the Government of India.
