Incident Details
On January 21, 2019, an Indigo Airbus A320 encountered a No. 2 (right) engine failure while climbing through flight level 120 (FL120) after departing from Lucknow Airport (LKO) in India. The crew detected a stall accompanied by engine vibration and an exhaust gas temperature (EGT) overlimit. In response, the flight crew executed an air turn back and subsequently performed a successful landing using the remaining engine.
Post-Landing Inspection
Following the landing, an inspection of the right engine revealed damage to the low pressure turbine (LPT) stage 3 blades.
Investigation
The Government of India notified the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) of the incident. The NTSB appointed a U.S. Accredited Representative to assist the Indian investigation, as the United States is the state of manufacture of the engine. The investigation is being conducted under the provisions of ICAO Annex 13. All investigative information will be released by the Government of India.
