What happened
On January 21, 2019, an Indigo Airbus A320, registration VT-ITQ, experienced a failure of the number 2 (right) engine while climbing through flight level 120. The incident occurred after the aircraft departed from Lucknow Airport (LKO) in India.
During the climb, the crew detected an engine stall accompanied by engine vibration and an exhaust gas temperature overlimit. In response to the engine failure, the crew performed an air turn back and completed a successful single-engine landing.
The investigation
An inspection of the right engine conducted after the landing revealed damage to the low pressure turbine stage 3 blades. The NTSB appointed a U.S. Accredited Representative to assist the government of India's investigation as the state of the engine manufacturer.
