What happened
On July 1, 2020, at approximately 19:05 local time, a student pilot was conducting solo training flights at Warsaw Babice Airport (EPBC). After successfully completing an initial circuit accompanied by an instructor, the pilot proceeded to perform a solo circuit in a PS-28 Cruiser, registration SP-GBE.
During the landing phase on runway 28, the aircraft bounced twice on the runway surface. The impact caused the aircraft to land heavily on its nose gear. This sequence resulted in significant damage to the propeller assembly, the nose landing gear strut, the attachment point to the fuselage, the shock absorber, and the landing light. The aircraft eventually came to a stop at the edge of the runway.
The investigation
The PKBWL investigation confirmed that the pilot held valid flight qualifications and a current medical certificate. The aircraft, operated by Ventum Air, was properly prepared for flight, with all documentation, weight and balance, and technical airworthiness in order. The investigation established that the engine remained functional until the propeller struck the runway surface. Meteorological conditions were favorable and did not contribute to the event, and two-way radio communication with air traffic services was maintained without issue.
Findings
The investigation identified the primary cause of the accident as pilot error involving a misjudgment of altitude during the landing phase and the failure to properly correct errors during the touchdown process.
