What happened
On a flight traveling from the Sept-Îles airport in Quebec toward the Goose Bay Airport in Newfoundland and Labrador, a privately registered Piper PA 46-350P (featuring a PT6A-35 powered JetProp DLX conversion) struck the ground during its landing sequence. After receiving clearance to land, the aircraft impacted terrain approximately 2.5 miles southwest of the airport, following the extended centerline of runway 08. Following the impact, the aircraft's 406 MHz emergency locator transmitter was activated. An emergency response team from Canadian Forces Base 5 Wing, Goose Bay, was deployed to the scene.
The investigation
The TSB conducted a Class 4 investigation into the crash. The investigation focused on the circumstances surrounding the aircraft's approach and the subsequent impact with the terrain near the airport.
Findings
- The impact occurred along the extended centerline of runway 08.
- The crash resulted in two serious injuries and one fatality, as the pilot later succumbed to his injuries.
