What happened
While performing a takeoff roll at Nakhchivan Airport, the crew of the aircraft experienced an unforeseen mechanical issue. At a velocity of 230 km/h, the flight crew elected to abort the takeoff procedure. During this aborted takeoff, the aircraft drifted off the runway and struck a concrete parapet. The impact caused the aircraft to catch fire.
The accident resulted in 29 fatalities among the occupants. Additionally, one crew member and four passengers sustained injuries during the event.
Findings
Investigation into the incident revealed that the primary factor was an unexplained malfunction involving the engine controls. Specifically, all four speed levers transitioned to the idle position while the aircraft was still in the takeoff roll phase.
