What happened
During a ferry flight from Kisangani to Myolaiv, Ukraine, intended for maintenance, a four-engine aircraft was preparing for departure from Luxor. The flight plan included scheduled stops in Entebbe and Luxor. At approximately 04:17 local time, the crew received clearance for takeoff on runway 02.
As the aircraft began its takeoff roll, it failed to achieve liftoff and continued traveling down the runway until reaching the end of the pavement. During this overrun, the aircraft drifted right of the centerline across a service road and entered a military zone located roughly 500 meters from the runway threshold. The impact with a building within the military unit caused the structure to be completely destroyed. Simultaneously, the right wing struck another building, which ignited a fire on the aircraft and forced a rightward turn. The aircraft continued moving forward, striking a fence near the Tiba-Luxor road and colliding with an oil barrel. The wreckage was consumed by fire, resulting in the fatalities of the crew and the total loss of the airframe, though no other injuries were reported.
Findings
Investigations into the accident identified several critical contributing factors. Most notably, there was a lack of available thrust because only two of the four engines were producing power during the takeoff run. Additionally, the aircraft had not undergone authorized maintenance. The crew's response to the emergency was also found to be uncoordinated; both pilots had previously served as captains, yet they failed to follow standard operating procedures for a rejected takeoff. While braking trails indicated the use of main wheel brakes, the crew did not implement necessary steps such as setting throttles to idle or utilizing nose wheel steering and propeller braking to maintain directional control.
