What happened
During the landing phase, the flight crew executed an improper approach configuration, leading to the aircraft passing the runway threshold at a speed of 350 km/h and an altitude of 30 meters. Instead of performing a go-around to reset the approach, the pilot-in-command proceeded with the landing. The aircraft touched down 710 meters beyond the threshold.
Due to the high velocity, the aircraft was unable to decelerate within the available runway length. The plane overran the pavement at 225 km/h, causing the undercarriage to separate from the airframe. The aircraft then slid for approximately 317 meters before striking concrete blocks that stood 2 meters high. The impact caused the aircraft to burst into flames. The accident resulted in 34 fatalities, including all four crew members, and left 29 passengers injured.
Findings
Investigations indicate that the primary factor in the accident was the failure to initiate a go-around following an unstable and high-speed approach.
