What happened
A cargo flight traveling from Goma to Kongolo encountered difficulties while approaching its destination. The aircraft, which was transporting a shipment of cigarettes, was operated by a crew of five. During the final stages of the approach, approximately 30 km from the airport, the crew notified air traffic control of technical issues occurring on board.
Despite these reported problems, the flight proceeded to land at Kongolo Airport. Upon touchdown, the aircraft failed to decelerate sufficiently within the available runway length. The plane exited the paved surface and entered a grassy area. During the excursion, the landing gear collapsed, and the right engine ignited.
Findings
- The aircraft was unable to stop within the remaining runway distance.
- The undercarriage collapse and subsequent engine fire occurred during the overrun.
- All five crew members successfully evacuated the aircraft without any injuries.
