Accident
A humanitarian flight evacuating flood victims from Tumbes to Piura crashed on final approach to Piura-Capitán Guillermo Concha Iberico Airport. The aircraft had departed Tumbes-Pedro Canga Rodríguez Airport with 50 passengers and five crew members aboard. During the approach, the right engine failed, causing the aircraft to lose height. It struck the shore of an irrigation canal less than 400 metres short of runway 01. The impact destroyed the aircraft, breaking it in two. 28 occupants were killed.
Probable Cause
The official investigation determined the probable cause to be failure of the right engine for unknown reasons. The report noted that at the time of the accident, the aircraft was heavily loaded.
