A charter flight transporting petroleum industry personnel crashed into a forested area during its approach to Andoas, resulting in 75 fatalities.

What happened

A charter operation serving the Occidental Petroleum Company was conducting a flight from Iquitos to Andoas when the accident occurred. The aircraft was carrying a total of 88 people, consisting of eight crew members and 80 employees or subcontractors. During the nighttime descent toward Andoas-Alferez FAP Alfredo Vladimir Sara Bauer Airport, the flight encountered adverse weather characterized by rainfall and reduced visibility.

While performing the final approach, the aircraft descended beneath the established glide path. The plane struck trees and came to rest in a heavily wooded region situated approximately 5 km from runway 12. Emergency responders reached the crash site roughly three hours after the impact. The accident resulted in 75 fatalities and left 13 occupants with serious injuries, including two members of the crew.

Findings

Investigations determined that the aircraft descended below the minimum safe altitude while operating in instrument meteorological conditions (IMC). This descent below safe altitude led to the impact with terrain.
