What happened
During a departure from runway 29R at Tehran-Mehrabad Airport, the aircraft began its takeoff roll without initial incident. As the pilot-in-command initiated the rotation by pulling back on the control column, the aircraft suffered a failure of one of its engines. This mechanical malfunction led to a total loss of control. The aircraft subsequently crashed and was consumed by fire.
Of the total occupants on board, 35 people were killed in the accident. While three passengers initially survived the impact with serious injuries, they all succumbed to their wounds a few hours after the event.
Findings
- The loss of control was precipitated by the failure of one engine during the rotation phase of the takeoff sequence.
