A Trigana Air Service flight experienced a total loss of power following consecutive engine failures during an approach to Samarinda, resulting in a forced landing in Samboja.

What happened

On 11 February 2010, an ATR 42-300, registration PK-YRP, was performing a scheduled commercial flight operated by Trigana Air Service. The flight, designated TGN162, was traveling from Kalimarau Airport Berau to Samarinda with a total of 52 persons on board, including 46 passengers and 6 crew members.

After departing Berau, the aircraft climbed to Flight Level 140 and was cleared by Balikpapan approach to proceed via waypoint LOLOT toward Samarinda. Upon contacting Temindung Tower, the crew received instructions for a left downwind approach for runway 04, with weather updates regarding wind conditions. While performing the final approach, the crew observed the left engine ECU light illuminate, accompanied by a drop in torque and oil pressure. In response to this malfunction, the pilot initiated a go-around and elected to divert to Balikpapan to execute engine shutdown procedures.

As the aircraft climbed through 3,800 feet, the right engine also experienced a failure, marked by the illumination of the ECU light and a loss of oil pressure and torque. Following the total loss of engine power, the crew declared a MAYDAY to Balikpapan Approach. The pilot decided to perform an emergency landing in a clear area near Samboja, approximately 16 nautical miles from Balikpapan Airport. The crew prepared the passengers for impact, and an evacuation was carried out once the aircraft reached a complete stop.

Probable cause

The aircraft suffered a sequential failure of both engines during a diversion attempt.
