What happened
The incident occurred while the crew was conducting a local training exercise at Fort McLeod Airport. During the final approach phase, at an altitude between 150 and 250 feet, the aircraft involved struck a second Avro 652 Anson registered as R9688. The other aircraft in the collision was also an Avro 652 Anson. Following the impact, both airplanes entered an uncontrolled descent and impacted the ground approximately 400 metres from the end of the runway. Both airframes burst into flames upon impact. All three individuals on board the two aircraft were killed in the accident.
Findings
The official investigation determined that the pilots of either aircraft failed to see each other prior to the collision.
