What happened
During a flight originating from Punta Arenas, the flight crew was initially instructed to execute a VOR approach toward runway 26. However, following a shift in wind conditions, the decision was made to transition to a straight-in approach for runway 08. During the landing phase, the aircraft touched down 427 meters beyond the runway threshold. The touchdown occurred at a speed of 112 knots, which exceeded both the reference speed of 110 knots and the intended target speed of 103 knots.
Due to the excessive landing distance and high velocity, the aircraft was unable to decelerate sufficiently before the end of the runway. The aircraft overran the pavement and entered the Beagle Canal, eventually coming to a stop approximately 20 meters from the shoreline. The accident resulted in 20 fatalities. Among the remaining occupants, 17 individuals sustained injuries, while 35 others were able to exit the aircraft without harm.
Findings
- The aircraft touched down significantly past the runway threshold.
- The landing speed was higher than the prescribed target touchdown speed.
- A change in wind components necessitated a change in approach direction, contributing to the landing circumstances.
