Event Details
An airplane experienced a left engine failure while on short final approach to Spirit Lake-Lake Okoboji Airport. The aircraft subsequently lost altitude and struck the runway surface. It then veered out of control, departing the runway and colliding with a perimeter fence. The impact ignited a fire that destroyed the aircraft.
Injuries and Damage
All six occupants aboard the aircraft sustained serious injuries. The airplane was completely destroyed by the impact and ensuing fire.
Probable Cause
The official investigation determined that the probable cause of the accident was a powerplant failure for undetermined reasons. Contributing factors included the pilot's failure to follow approved procedures, improper emergency procedures, failure to maintain flying speed, complete engine failure, propeller slash marks spaced 21 inches apart, and the propeller not being feathered.
