What happened
A scheduled international flight traveling from San Francisco, California, toward Singapore via several intermediate stops, including Manila, the Philippines, was involved in an accident during arrival. The aircraft, carrying 49 passengers and a crew of 8, arrived at Manila's Runway 06 at approximately 21:23 GMT on June 1.
During the landing roll, the main landing gear assembly failed. This collapse caused the aircraft type to skid and veer toward the right side of the runway. The movement continued until the plane came to a stop on the right shoulder, roughly 2,850 feet from the western end of the runway and 27 feet from the pavement edge. During the sequence, a blade from the No. 3 propeller detached and entered the cabin area. This impact resulted in one fatality and caused serious injuries to another passenger. The aircraft sustained significant structural damage.
Findings
The investigation determined that the primary cause of the incident was a hard landing which led to the failure or collapse of the right main gear 'V' strut support. Environmental conditions, specifically heavy rainfall and gusty winds, were identified as contributing factors during the landing phase.
