What happened
During a nighttime approach to Kano-Mallam Aminu Kano Airport, an aircraft encountered difficult flying conditions caused by a sandstorm. As the flight was on short final approach, the aircraft descended below the required altitude and impacted the ground approximately 3.2 km before reaching the threshold of runway 06. The impact occurred in the vicinity of a nearby military barracks.
Following the crash, a fire broke out, resulting in the total destruction of the aircraft. Despite the severity of the impact and the subsequent fire, all four occupants were successfully rescued from the wreckage.
Findings
Investigation into the circumstances of the accident noted that the runway 06 ILS and DME systems were inoperative at the time of the incident. The presence of a sandstorm further reduced visibility and contributed to the marginal weather conditions during the descent.
