What happened
During a departure from runway 29 at Tehran-Mehrabad Airport, a four-engine airplane encountered difficulties while climbing through low visibility conditions. Instead of executing the left turn required by the Standard Instrument Procedures for OIII Airport, the aircraft drifted toward the right side of the flight path.
While maintaining an altitude of approximately 6,500 feet, the plane collided with a mountain slope situated 17 km northwest of the airfield. The mountain involved in the collision stands at an elevation of 2,020 metres. The force of the impact caused the aircraft to disintegrate. There were five fatalities among the occupants of the aircraft.
Findings
Investigations concluded that the accident was a result of controlled flight into terrain. This occurred because the crew did not adhere to the established departure procedures for runway 29 at the time of the accident.
