What happened
During the descent toward Huambo-Albano Machado Airport, air traffic control notified the flight crew that maintenance activities were underway, resulting in the closure of the initial 500 meters of runway 01/19.
As the aircraft approached the runway, the crew utilized an incorrect approach configuration. This error led to the aircraft touching down approximately halfway down the available runway length. Because of the late touchdown point, the pilot was unable to decelerate sufficiently within the remaining distance of the pavement. The aircraft subsequently exited the runway surface, causing the landing gear to separate from the airframe. The vessel traveled an additional 250 meters after leaving the paved area before coming to a complete stop.
There were no injuries reported among the three crew members on board. However, the aircraft was determined to be a total loss due to the extent of the structural damage.
Findings
- The primary factor in the accident was the incorrect approach configuration used by the crew during the landing phase.
- Ongoing runway construction and the partial closure of the runway surface reduced the available stopping distance.
