What happened
While performing a takeoff roll on runway 35 at Quito-Mariscal Sucre Airport, the captain of the aircraft determined that the takeoff should be aborted. Just prior to reaching V1 speed, the pilot executed an emergency braking procedure. Despite these efforts, the aircraft could not stop before the end of the runway.
Following the overrun, the plane struck an ILS antenna and proceeded down an embankment. The sequence of events concluded when the aircraft collided with a concrete wall. There were no fatalities among the 90 occupants on board, all of whom evacuated the aircraft safely. The aircraft, which was carrying the players and staff of the Corinthians soccer club, sustained damage that rendered it a total loss.
Findings
- The pilot initiated an aborted takeoff shortly before reaching the decision speed.
