Incident Overview
On the day of the accident, a flight operated by an unnamed carrier was preparing for a takeoff from runway 35 at Quito-Mariscal Sucre Airport. The aircraft was carrying 90 occupants, including all staff and players of the Brazilian soccer team Corinthians. During the takeoff roll, just before reaching V1 speed, the captain decided to abort the takeoff and initiated emergency braking.
Sequence of Events
The aircraft was unable to stop within the remaining runway distance. It overran the runway, collided with the ILS (Instrument Landing System) antenna, continued down an embankment, struck a concrete wall, and came to rest. The aircraft sustained damage beyond repair. All 90 occupants evacuated safely.
Investigation Findings
The official investigation determined the probable cause of the accident. At the time of the accident, the total weight of the aircraft was 69,620 kilograms, approximately 9,700 kilograms above the maximum takeoff weight (MTOW). The crew had been informed by the operator that the MTOW was 70,000 kilograms.
