What happened
During an approach and landing sequence at Lichinga Airport, the aircraft encountered intense rainfall. Upon making contact with the runway, the aircraft experienced aquaplaning, which prevented the crew from decelerating the plane within the available runway length.
As a result of the inability to stop, the aircraft type overran the end of the runway. During the excursion, the vessel sustained substantial structural damage, including the loss of one engine and one landing gear unit. The aircraft eventually came to a halt several dozen meters past the runway threshold.
Findings
- All 108 occupants on board managed to evacuate the aircraft without sustaining any injuries.
- The primary factor in the accident was aquaplaning caused by heavy precipitation during the landing phase.
