What happened
An aircraft arriving from Lima was performing its approach to Runway 28 at Cuzco-Alejandro Velasco Astete Airport. During the descent, the crew configured the aircraft for landing by extending the flaps to 15°. The aircraft completed a smooth touchdown on the runway.
Shortly after the landing, the crew initiated braking procedures. Approximately eight seconds after the wheels contacted the ground, the pilot detected vibrations originating from the left main landing gear. As the aircraft continued its rollout at a speed of 100 knots, the right main gear suffered a structural failure and collapsed. This caused the aircraft to roll for several hundred meters before coming to a complete stop on the runway.
There were no fatalities among the 139 occupants, all of whom evacuated the aircraft without injury. The aircraft sustained damage that was determined to be beyond repair.
Findings
- The aircraft was in a landing configuration with flaps set to 15°.
- A mechanical failure led to the collapse of the right main gear while the aircraft was decelerating at 100 knots.
