What happened
On November 3, 2015, Shaheen Air International flight NL-142, operated by a Boeing 737-400 with registration AP-BJO, was performing a scheduled service from Karachi to Lahore. Due to ongoing ILS CAT-III upgrades making Runway 36R unavailable, the flight was directed to land on Runway 36L.
Upon making contact with the runway surface, the aircraft experienced a mechanical failure where both main landing gears collapsed in succession. This structural failure caused the aircraft to lose directional control, leading it to depart the runway surface. The aircraft eventually came to a halt 8302 ft from the runway threshold, positioned 197 ft to the left of the runway centerline. During the excursion, the aircraft was supported by its two engines, though the nose landing gear did not sustain damage.
All passengers on board were successfully evacuated from the aircraft following emergency protocols, and there were no fatalities or injuries reported during the incident.
Findings
- The landing was conducted on Runway 36L because the primary runway was undergoing instrumentation upgrades.
- The primary cause of the runway excursion was the sequential failure of both main landing gear assemblies immediately following touchdown.
