What happened
On the morning of September 11, 2001, a Boeing 757 departed from Washington-Dulles Airport at 08:10 local time. The aircraft was operating a scheduled commercial flight bound for Los Angeles, carrying a total of 58 passengers and a crew of six.
Shortly after takeoff, the flight was intercepted by terrorists who took control of the aircraft. Following the hijacking, the flight path was altered, directing the plane toward Washington, D.C. At 09:45 local time, the aircraft struck the southwest side of the Pentagon building. The impact caused the aircraft to disintegrate, resulting in 64 fatalities and no survivors among the occupants.
Findings
The destruction of the aircraft was caused by a terrorist hijacking that redirected the flight into a building. Due to the nature of the event and the ongoing investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the National Transportation Safety Board provided technical support but did not release a formal safety report or public docket regarding the crash.
