Overview
On a night landing at New York-LaGuardia Airport, an aircraft collided with a Port Authority Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting (ARFF) vehicle after it had touched down on runway 04. The sequence of events led to the destruction of the cockpit and front section, resulting in fatalities and injuries.
Sequence of Events
After landing on runway 04, the flight crew initiated the braking procedure. At a ground speed of 114 knots, the aircraft struck truck number 35, which had been dispatched to assist United Boeing 737 MAX 8 flight 2384 due to an unknown odor in the cockpit. The fire truck had received preliminary clearance and entered the runway from taxiway D, on the left side of the aircraft's path. Impact occurred while the aircraft was still traveling at 114 knots.
Following the collision, the aircraft went out of control, veered off the runway to the right, and came to rest on a parallel taxiway. The cockpit and forward fuselage were completely destroyed.
Aftermath
Both pilots, Antoine Forest and Mackenzie Gunther, were killed. Nine passengers were injured. A total of 41 passengers and crew members were transported to hospitals; 32 of those have since been released. Two members of the fire truck crew also sustained injuries.
