Accident Overview
On October 25, 2021, at approximately 0725 local time (2154 UTC on October 24), a single-engine cargo airplane on an unscheduled flight from Timika to Ilaga impacted an embankment about 15 meters before the threshold of Runway 25 at Ilaga Airport (WAYL) in the Puncak district of Papua, Indonesia. The aircraft came to rest about 90 meters from the beginning of the runway.
Flight Details
The aircraft, flying from Moses Kilangin Airport (WAYY) in Timika, carried two pilots and 2,352 lbs (1,067 kg) of cargo. The Pilot in Command (PIC) was the Pilot Flying (PF), and the Second in Command (SIC) was the Pilot Monitoring (PM). The flight departed Timika on October 24 at 2154 UTC (October 25, 0654 local time) during daylight hours. The flight was uneventful until the approach to Ilaga.
Accident Sequence
According to a witness on the Ilaga apron, the short final area of Runway 25 was partially covered by ground fog. Two aircraft that made approach landings before the accident aircraft cancelled their approaches and performed go-arounds. The accident aircraft, identified as PK-SNN, made an approach and impacted an embankment about 15 meters short of the runway.
Aftermath
One pilot was killed and the other pilot was injured in the accident.
