A military aircraft crashed into the ground near Fort Worth after losing both engines during a ferry flight, resulting in the deaths of all seven crew members on board.

What happened

The incident occurred while the aircraft was conducting a ferry mission from CGAS Biloxi to NAS Seattle for scheduled overhaul. During the flight, the pilot identified an oil leak affecting the right engine. Following this initial issue, the crew reported single-engine operation and requested emergency clearance to divert to Fort Worth.

As the aircraft proceeded out of the north leg of the Fort Worth range, the remaining left engine stopped functioning due to an unknown cause. The propeller on that side was subsequently feathered. The aircraft then emerged from cloud cover in a left spin and impacted the terrain. The impact forces destroyed the airframe, and all seven crew members were killed.

Findings

The official investigation attributed the accident to mechanical failures affecting both powerplants. Specifically, the sequence of events began with an oil leak on the right engine, which was followed by the failure of the left engine.

Probable cause

Oil leak on the right engine and failure of the left engine.
