What happened
During an approach toward Galeão Airport in Rio de Janeiro, the flight encountered deteriorating weather conditions characterized by heavy rainfall and dense fog. Due to these environmental factors, air traffic control directed the crew to enter a holding pattern.
While attempting a subsequent approach to the airport shortly thereafter, the aircraft type lost stability and went out of control. The plane subsequently impacted the surface of Guanabara Bay. The impact resulted in the total destruction of the airframe. There were no survivors among the 54 fatalities recorded during the event.
