What happened
During a local training mission, a group of four aircraft departed from a temporary airfield. The flight was being conducted in formation when a mid-air collision occurred between the lead aircraft and another Caribou, registered 63-9749. The circumstances surrounding the impact remain undetermined.
Following the collision, both aircraft lost control and descended into a prairie area situated approximately 18 miles south of Augusta. The accident resulted in six fatalities, as all crew members aboard both planes perished in the crash.
