What happened
During a local training mission, a group of four aircraft departed from a temporary airfield. The flight was being conducted in formation alongside three other similar planes. While flying in this grouping, a mid-air collision occurred between the lead aircraft and another Caribou, registered 63-9749. The specific circumstances surrounding the impact remain undetermined.
Following the collision, both aircraft lost control and descended into a prairie area situated approximately 18 miles south of Augusta. The accident resulted in six fatalities, as all crew members aboard both the primary aircraft and the second Caribou perished in the crash.
