What happened
The incident involved a light aircraft operating out of Nottingham. The flight had commenced as a short local joyride. During the return leg of the journey, the engine experienced a mechanical failure. In response to this loss of power, the pilot initiated an emergency procedure to return to the departure airfield for a forced landing.
Despite the pilot's efforts to manage the descent and approach, the aircraft crashed upon impact with the ground. The collision resulted in significant structural damage, leaving the airframe destroyed. Both individuals on board sustained injuries in the accident.
Findings
The official investigation identified the primary factor leading to the crash as an engine failure. This mechanical issue forced the pilot to attempt an emergency landing, which ultimately ended in a ground impact.
