A maritime patrol aircraft was forced to ditch offshore after being targeted by anti-aircraft fire during a mission near Kaimana.

What happened

Following the completion of a paratrooper deployment mission in the vicinity of Kaimana, the aircraft was intercepted by a Royal Netherlands Navy (MLD) Neptune, identified by registration 207. During this encounter, the aircraft came under fire from 20 mm cannon rounds.

In response to the incoming fire, the crew decided to perform an emergency ditching in the ocean. The aircraft type subsequently sank and was destroyed. Despite the loss of the vessel, all seven crew members were successfully recovered from the water.
