What happened
A flight departing from Barcelona-El Prat Airport for Barajas in Madrid encountered significant weather difficulties during its journey. While navigating the Calamocha region, air traffic control directed the crew to alter their original flight path due to adverse meteorological conditions.
The final communication with the aircraft occurred at 16:56LT. Shortly thereafter, while flying through low visibility, the aircraft type (unspecified in source) impacted trees on the eastern slope of Mt Cerro del Télégrafo, situated within the Sierra de Valdemeca approximately 150 km east of Madrid. The wreckage was located at an elevation roughly 60 meters below the 1,900-meter summit. The impact resulted in 28 fatalities, with no survivors reported among the occupants.
Findings
Investigations revealed that at the time of the collision, the aircraft was operating approximately 600 meters below its required altitude. While it was established that the crew had to deviate from their planned route because of unfavorable weather conditions, investigators were unable to determine a definitive cause for the crash.
