Aircraft crash near Agartala Airport during approach

3 fatalities • Agartala, India • Landing (descent or approach)

An aircraft crashed short of the runway at Agartala Airport after the crew attempted multiple landings in weather conditions below established minimums.

What happened

During an approach to Agartala Airport, the flight crew encountered adverse weather. The pilot-in-command initiated a go-around following the initial approach attempt. A subsequent effort to land was also aborted several minutes later.

Despite meteorological conditions being below the required landing minima, the crew proceeded with a third landing attempt. During this final approach, the pilot-in-command could not visually identify the runway. A further go-around was attempted; however, the aircraft collided with trees a few kilometers from the runway threshold. The impact and subsequent post-crash fire resulted in the total destruction of the aircraft. All three crew members were killed in the accident.

Findings

Investigations concluded that the primary factor in the accident was the decision made by the flight crew to attempt an approach and landing while weather conditions were below the prescribed minimums.

Probable cause

The crew's decision to proceed with landing attempts despite weather conditions being below established minimum visibility requirements.
