What happened
On January 9, 1993, an Tu-154 aircraft, registration 85533, was performing flight IC-840 from Hyderabad to Delhi. The aircraft was operated by Uzbekistan Airways under a wet lease agreement for Indian Airlines. During the landing phase, the aircraft, manned by a crew from Uzbekistan, carried a total of 165 people.
As the aircraft approached the runway, it made contact with the ground slightly beyond the right edge of the runway surface. Following this initial contact, the plane struck various fixed ground installations. The impact caused the aircraft to become airborne a second time before it eventually settled on unpaved ground to the right of the runway. During this sequence, the tail section and the right wing separated from the fuselage, and the aircraft came to a halt in an inverted position. A fire broke out during the accident, resulting in the total destruction of the airframe.
Findings
While the majority of the 165 occupants managed to escape the wreckage without significant harm, the accident resulted in 6 fatal or serious injuries involving limb fractures and other severe trauma, alongside 45 passengers and crew who sustained minor injuries. The primary factor in the destruction of the aircraft was the impact with ground installations and the subsequent structural failure of the wing and tail.
