What happened
During an approach to San Borja-Capitán Germán Quiroga Guardia Airport, the flight crew initiated a descent while operating in conditions of restricted visibility. While flying at an altitude of approximately 3,000 meters, the aircraft collided with the slope of Mt Pilón. The impact occurred roughly 80 km southwest of the destination airport.
The collision caused the aircraft to disintegrate upon hitting the terrain. There were no survivors in the accident, as all 23 fatalities were recorded among the occupants of the flight.
Findings
Investigations into the crash determined that the crew began their descent earlier than appropriate for the prevailing conditions. The accident is classified as a controlled flight into terrain.
