Aircraft accident during training flight near Mendoza

5 fatalities • Mendoza-El Plumerillo, Argentina • Takeoff (climb)

A training flight departing from Mendoza-El Plumerillo Airport resulted in a fatal crash after an engine failure during the initial climb.

What happened

During a scheduled training mission bound for Paraná, an aircraft experienced a critical mechanical failure shortly after departing from Mendoza-El Plumerillo Airport. While the aircraft was ascending to an altitude of approximately 50 metres, the engine on the right side ceased producing power.

In response to the engine failure, the crew declared an emergency and attempted to execute a left-hand turn to facilitate a return to the departure airfield. During this maneuver, the aircraft became uncontrollable. The plane entered a stall and impacted the ground roughly 300 metres beyond the runway threshold. The impact caused the aircraft to catch fire.

Findings

  • The accident resulted in five fatalities among the crew members.
  • The primary factor leading to the loss of control was the loss of power in the right engine during the climb phase.

Probable cause

The loss of power in the right engine during a low-altitude climb led to an aerodynamic stall and subsequent loss of control.
