Incident Overview
Minutes after departing from Cagayancillo Airport, the pilot of an aircraft reported engine problems. Air traffic control cleared the flight to return for an emergency landing. On final approach, the aircraft was not properly aligned with the runway. The captain increased engine power and initiated a go-around. During this maneuver, the aircraft lost altitude and crashed into the sea approximately 2 kilometers offshore.
Casualties and Rescue
One passenger was rescued from the crash site. The other 14 occupants, including General Santiago Madrid, Chief of the southwestern military command, were killed.
Official Findings
Investigators determined the probable cause of the accident to be engine failure for unknown reasons.
