What happened
On December 31, 2019, a Robinson R44 helicopter was conducting a VFR flight from Pinkafeld towards Punitz Güssing. While on final approach to runway 15, the pilot observed another aircraft on the runway and executed a left turn to the east of the airfield.
During this maneuver, the pilot perceived a loss of engine power. In response, the pilot decided to perform an autorotative landing on an unpaved field located north-northeast of the aerodrome. As the pilot initiated the flare to touchdown, the tail rotor struck the ground. This impact caused the separation of the tail rotor and induced a dynamic rotation around the vertical axis. The helicopter subsequently tipped onto its left side and came to a halt. The pilot and two passengers were able to evacuate the aircraft independently, sustaining light injuries.
The investigation
The Austrian SUB examined the wreckage, cockpit instruments, and flight logs. Technical analysis focused on the engine performance and the state of the governor during the descent. Investigators reviewed the engine's Lycoming O-540-F1B5 powerplant and checked for any mechanical failures. The investigation also looked into the pilot's actions during the flare and the physical state of the tail rotor assembly following the impact.
