What happened
During a nighttime final approach into Bereznik, the aircraft's left engine suffered a sudden loss of power. In response to the engine failure, the crew attempted to execute a go-around procedure. However, during this maneuver, the plane experienced a left bank and began to descend. The aircraft subsequently impacted treetops while traveling at a speed of 160 km/h, eventually coming to rest in a forested region.
The accident resulted in 4 fatalities among the occupants, with 4 injuries reported. While some passengers sustained injuries, the remaining members of the 16-person flight escaped the wreckage without harm.
Findings
Investigations into the incident revealed that the primary factor was a mechanical failure involving the engine controls. Specifically, a cable linked to the throttle lever for the left engine became disconnected during the approach phase. This disconnection led to an immediate and unintended drop in engine RPM, preventing the crew from maintaining sufficient power for a successful go-around.
