Engine failure during takeoff from Cape Schmidt Airfield

No fatalities • Cape Schmidt, Russia • Takeoff (climb)

A survey aircraft experienced total engine power loss shortly after departing Cape Schmidt Airfield, leading to an emergency water landing in the Akatan lagoon.

What happened

During a survey mission over the Chokutka Sea, an aircraft experienced a critical malfunction during its initial climb. Shortly after departing from Cape Schmidt Airfield, the aircraft reached an altitude of approximately 100 meters when both engines simultaneously lost power and ceased functioning.

In response to the dual engine failure, the crew initiated an emergency procedure to ditch the plane in the Akatan lagoon. The aircraft successfully landed in the water, coming to a stop roughly 200 meters from the shore in a depth of approximately 50 cm.

While the aircraft sustained damage that rendered it beyond repair, there were no casualties. All nine occupants were successfully evacuated from the wreckage without injury.

Findings

The investigation into the incident determined that the primary factor was an unexplained loss of power in both engines during the climb phase.

Probable cause

The simultaneous failure of both engines for unknown reasons caused the loss of flight capability.
