Low fuel levels following diversion at Tenerife South Airport

Casualties unknown • Aeropuerto de Tenerife Sur-Reina Sofía (Santa Cruz de Tenerife), ES

An Iberia Express Airbus A320-214 landed at Tenerife South with fuel levels below the required minimum reserve following a missed approach.

What happened

On February 9, 2024, at approximately 16:45 UTC, an Airbus A320-214, registration EC-JFH, operated by Iberia Express, was performing a commercial passenger flight from Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport to Tenerife North Airport.

Upon approaching Tenerife North, the crew entered several holding patterns. Due to poor local meteorological conditions, the crew performed a missed approach because of insufficient visibility. Following the aborted landing attempt, the crew decided to divert to the alternative aerodrome, Tenerife South Airport.

The aircraft subsequently landed on runway 25 at Tenerife South. Upon arrival, the remaining fuel on board was 1,000 kg, which was below the aircraft's minimum required fuel reserve of 1,190 kg. There were no injuries to the 6 crew members or 164 passengers, and no damage was sustained by the aircraft.

The investigation

The CIAIAC investigation is focused on evaluating the crew's actions during the flight, the initial flight planning, and the operator's internal procedures regarding missed approaches and fuel loading requirements.

Probable cause

The investigation is examining the factors that led to the aircraft operating with fuel levels below the minimum required reserve following a diversion and missed approach.
