What happened
On September 2, 2022, at 22:46 UTC, a loss of separation incident occurred approximately 10 kilometers north of Aeroparque Jorge Newbery in Buenos Aires. The event involved two commercial aircraft: an Airbus A320-232, registration LV-IVN, operated by JetSmart Airlines S.A., and an Airbus A330-202, registration EC-MKJ, operated by Iberia.
The Airbus A320-232 was performing its initial climb phase from Aeroparque Jorge Newbery toward Mendoza. Simultaneously, the Airbus A330-202 was in its descent phase, arriving from Madrid-Barajas. During the climb, the Traffic Collision Avoidance System (TCAS) issued an ADVISORY alert to the crew of the JetSmart aircraft.
The investigation
The Argentine Transportation Safety Board (JST) conducted a technical investigation into the encounter. Investigators reviewed the flight data and the circumstances surrounding the flight phases of both aircraft. The investigation focused on the functionality of the onboard safety systems and the subsequent maneuvers performed by the flight crews.
